The discoverer of how the foot
arch muscles operate and author of "How To Use the Foot Arch
Correctly", Dennis Denlinger has this to say about how the
discovery came about:

"As far back into my childhood as I can
remember I had flat feet. When I was in Junior High School my
Mother got me arch support shoes. As a golf caddy summers during
the high school years my foot arches would hurt as I was carrying
the bags of golf clubs up and down hills.
"Decades later a pair of fashionable pointy-toed
shoes pressed against the side of my right great toe, causing it
to become ingrown. That really hurt. To relieve the pressure, I
bought a pair of Earth Shoes...remember the shoes with the super
big toe and low heel?
"Yes, Earth Shoes were the thing. However,
there was a dark side. While many people loved the comfort of the
Earth Shoes, others could not wear them due to discomfort. It so
happened that I was one of those who could not wear Earth Shoes
comfortably, even though my ingrown toe nail felt much better. In
fact, the pain was so bad I was somewhat crippled and walked funny.
"I reasoned that since some people could
wear Earth Shoes comfortably and I could not, I must be doing something
wrong. I looked, searched and investigated. It took me three months
to discover what was wrong. My understanding of how to build a stone
arch which I learned in Architecture School made the difference.
"What was the discovery? Part of it is that
many shoes today are designed with arch supports which do more harm
than good by allowing the unused foot arch muscles to become even
weaker.
"The Earth Shoes were different. They were
designed to force a person to use the foot arch muscles so as to
have good arches...or hurt. Unfortunately the Earth Shoe Company
did not include instructions in how to use the muscles which make
the foot arch. That was up to me to discover.
"Once I had discovered which muscles to use
it took me a month to strenghten the muscles so I was no longer
crippled. Then it took another three months to get rid of the pain
altogether. Finally, it was almost a year until the correct use
of those muscles became a habit and I could forget about it.
"Luckily for you, my experience was unusual.
Many whom I have taught have taken much less time. One person took
only 2 hours during a walk after the lesson to get her arches to
working beautifully.
"Something else about this discovery surprised
me. People with apparently excellent arches were having other problems
with their feet or legs which cleared up when they learned how to
use their foot arch muscles the right way. I remember one young
dancer who even got over shin splints by using her arch muscles
better."
